2 Train | Rain Room: Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass
Hannes Koch and Florian Ortkrass, of the London-based art collective Random International, created an installation piece called the “Rain Room.”
The “Rain Room” invites the viewers to walk into the open space and experience an aspect of nature (rain) without actually getting wet. Motion sensors detect movement and predict the direction of the movement to surround the viewer with at least 6 feet of dry space. There are grates on the floor to drain the water.
The “Rain Room” was one of my first interactions with installation art that sits in the intersection of design and technology while also creating an experience for the viewer. It allows the viewer to experience the beauty of walking in the rain without having to deal with the consequences of getting wet. I find the installation beautiful, captivating and memorable and would be interested in creating similar installation art in the future.
